Glen,

I am not near my LaserJet at the moment. It has three modes (PCL, PS, and AUTO). AUTO is the one that can cause mayhem if your PostScript file does not begin as expected (it was, if I recall, documented correctly in the printer manual). It was accessible from the configuration menu (front panel).
