poll() is available in OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-2 and later and OpenVMS I64 
V8.2 and later, per the appendix in 
<http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/84final/5763/ba554_90014.pdf>.   
Otherwise, there's native I/O.
