LOL all you want, but — in all seriousness — that sort of programming
effort and that sort of detailed readings of the available specs and
docs for a complex program or an operating system is how you learn the
application or the operating system. By using it. By programming it.
By operating it. Yes, by making mistakes. There are theoretical
aspects to programming, but there's also the need for journeyman-style
experience with the target software; of gaining the confidence and
experience to be able to research and to wade into some aspect of some
complex software system, and minimally either hack it, or figure it out.

Some folks have the tools to recover deleted files, or have the budget
to hire somebody that has the experience and tools, and many folks have
backups.
If somebody should lack the skills and the budget and the backups, then
there's a problem.
