/Please/, don't /kid/ yourself...

Also, most importantly, VMS can't help it if sub-standard software
(like CIFS, in its current form) malfunctions and destroys data.

Again, please don't kid yourself...  There's DFU and also Florian
(apparently, thanks to Keith Cayemberg for reminding us and pointing
us to it), perhaps other tools as well.

DFU is pretty well-known, I've heard of it ever since I first started
using VMS and I was recommended it as an 'absolute essential' (a bit
like LDD).
