I used to build rtty decoders to receive the press agencies on hf radio and
heard of Chairman Mao's death from xinua even before it was on bbc news.
This
was in the early 70's timescale anf for me, bc (before computing). The first
hardcopy printer was Justowriter, which was a Flexowriter re-packaged for
typesetting. It used a 6 bit code, 5 bits of baudot'ish and a sixth for
the letters
/ figures shift. Home made code conversion used a diode matrix lookup
table, then
hv transistors to drive the 6 printer solenoids.

Had tried a Creed 7B prior to that, but it weighed a ton and kept
jamming up.

So easy to do all that stuff now, but all the agencies moved off hf
years ago...

Regards,

Chris
