The exact error message will help greatly.  The paraphrased error 
message will not help, as there are a number of VMS error messages that 
are similar, and the text details here do matter.

To invoke the (ancient, crufty) EDT text editor around any other EDIT 
symbols or local customizations, use this, yes, with some extra Ts in 
there.

$ EDITTT /EDT HELLO.C

Other common editors including vim and microemacs (and an old version 
of emacs) can be downloaded onto OpenVMS, or may already be installed 
on the system.
