You know the particular target device features and capabilities best, 
of course.  Some network devices are designed to annouce themselves via 
mDNS multicasts, or through other multicasts or other means of 
announcement or registration.  You can learn a whole lot about what's 
connected on your LAN by monitoring the local mDNS network traffic, for 
instance.  Some other devices do require explicit client network 
connections.
