I'll take that further and say that dropping the contents of any 
software distribution tape to disk and installing from there was 
substantially faster than doing it direct from tape.

Ditto for the CDs.  The early drives were painfully slow.  I was lucky 
enough to have a 1GB external SCSI disk which was handy for putting VMS 
distributions on and then plugging into whichever system I wanted to 
deal with.
