That *was* my original idea with the "large-capacity" disk drives - a secure
repository for family documents of all types.  Getting the information on
to VMS from other systems was not easy, and not something I could easily
teach my wife, however.

That problem, along with the electric bill, were the showstoppers.

I now have a similar set-up at home; much greater storage capacity, less
electricty use, simpler to use.  Not as "secure" or robust, however (I don't
have the money for a RAID setup).
