I don't know what the definition of free is here. When I got a Macbook 
in 2009, I think it was 10.6. The OS came on one or two CDs, and Xcode 
came on a third CD. All delivered with the machine.

Oh, how I wish they still sold their software on CDs...

But no. No it has to be through that horrible experience called 
AppStore, or iTunes Store, or whatever the name actually is.

Worse experiences are hard to find.
