I suffered from that with various versions of MS Office.  Going back to 
Office 97, which was the only one I ever owned personally, there was an 
"Extras" folder on the CD which contained some very useful import 
utilities.

The Excel import plugin was extremely useful for getting data in from 
sequential files, but I found that functionality completely absent from 
the flavour of Office on a corporate locked down PC couple of years ago.

Which was where I started using OpenOffice (now superseded by 
LibreOffice) instead :-)
