I've encountered GbE managed switches misnegotiating with mid-vintage 
EV6 Alpha gear.  (When you've got visibility within the switch, you can 
see this error far more easily, too.  Managed switches are getting much 
cheaper, too.)

At the site where that most recent misnegotiation happened, the NIC and 
the switch port are now both locked settings, with the ports tagged and 
labels on the switch and the wiring.

I've had far fewer issues with GbE NICs and GbE switches; that stuff 
finally seems to work fairly well.
