Multiple typo alert. That should be:

write sys$output f$getdvi( <ethernet devnam>, "adapter_ident" )

On Eisner, which is running V8.3:

$ write sys$output f$getdvi( "EWA2:", "adapter_ident" )
DE504-BA (quad Fast Ethernet)
