A lot has already been written about terminal servers in general.
I'd just like to add that DEC was not the *only* manufacturer
of these things. I have used quite a lot of Lantronix terminal
servers from the older ETS-line 8/16 port serves to the current
WiBox wireless 2-port servers. The WiBox is the standard device
to connect any serial production equipment to their VMS systems.
Easy installation, no cabling. Just a serial cable to the actual
equipment and a power jack for the power supply and hey, that 20
year old production equipment is now "wireless" ! :-)
The ETS servers was nice since they uses the old DECserver
syntax, they actualy *look* more or less like a DECserver
when you are logged in to them. And will full flash, no MOP.
We are also moving all LAT into Telnet sessions. Note, these
are not for terminals, it's VMS that inits the connection to
the ports and detached apps connects the the LTA/TNA devices.
There are currently 20 hits for "lantronix ets" on eBay.
Jan-Erik.
