I forgot to say in my earlier post that the USB 2.0 disks I use for 
backups are the current bottleneck in my set up.  A little over 30 MB/s 
seems to be the limit, with lower speeds for lots of small files.

Having said that, I schedule them to happen when I am asleep or doing 
other stuff, so it's not critical.
