I guess that's why schools don't accept Wiki as a valid research source.  :-)

The CPU is listed as a NEC Chip.  Apparently a MIPS (licensed) clone rather
than a chip actually maufactured by MIPS.
 
I stand corrected.  Of course, in my defense, my daughter had a Nintendo 
at some point but I never took it apart to see what was inside.  Game
systems never really impressed me.
