The firmware for the Digital Server 5305 is 6.0-4 and has been so for
quite some time (since 2001 IIRC).
I've been using 6.0-4 on all my Digital Server 530x systems and had to
use the nvram escape route.
One of my Alpha Server 1200 systems came with Alpha Server 4100
firmware loaded. The system thought it was
an AlphaServer 4100 with two processors installed. The firmware for
the 4000/4100 is at version 6.1, which is more recent
(I think). Whether it will solve the VMS compatibility issue I do not
know.
Since I've got 5 whitebox alpha's (four 530x's and one 3300), your
reference to a "whitebox alpha backstory" makes me curious !
