Even a VT terminal will wrap long lines, unless you tell it not to do so.

Or, if you insist, it will wrap long lines if you tell it to do so.

Actually, it's the terminal driver that respects the declared length of 
lines ...

I use Thunderbird.  It has options, including at what column to wrap 
test during composition.  It's a better tool.  I can be stubborn, but at 
times it doesn't serve me well.

So, from VT terminals, to a fairly recent newsreader, there are set-up 
options.  Use them to fit your needs.  If you don't, who's fault is that?
