My apologies; I did not intend to hijack this thread.  512MB is
usable for most of the Linux systems I run, and this one is rather
atypical for various reasons.  No point in trying to help me straighten
it all out - I'll have my normal system working again soon (older, but
configured more reasonably; not to mention having twice the memory).
