Ah, seems that the advice has — much like the technology has advanced — 
changed.  That, or my memory is shot.

I'll update what I have posted with the autonegotiation settings, 
conditional to newer hardware and to V7.3-2 and later.

In my experience, even the newer DE500 boards don't negotiate entirely 
reliably, and that was with V8.4.

I've moved to full GbE everywhere (everywhere that can support it), and 
the only boxes I still have trouble with are the non-GbE boxes and the 
older VMS boxes.
