Just to complicate the issue, Dukes don't seem to live in their
dukedom either.  The Duke of Devonshire for example spends a lot of time
in Yorkshire (Bolton Abbey) and owns the  stately home Chatsworth House
(interesting architecturally BTW) in Derbyshire, both of which are
hundreds of miles from Devon.

(I hasten to add that I only know the above because at one time Bolton
Abbey and the surrounding countryside were a favourite stomping ground in
my younger days)
