Same here... I first learned about VMS around that time.
I wasn't even sure that "OpenVMS" was the actual thing,
I thought Open- (back then) referred to something like
some kind of 'open' source spin-off, a la OpenBSD.
Then, only around 2005~'06 I started to learn more and
more about it and I thought of the possibility of
getting some actual hardware. Before I knew it, I
could barely control myself and got a whole battery of
servers and had very ambitious plans.
Up to 2010, HP and Intel were 'assuring' people that
they were "committed" (and similar lies). So yes, I
stopped being in denial around 2011~'12, especially
after having smelled some more 'coffee' here.
