HP did say up front that it planned to continue VMS. But having no 
connections with the VMS community, the message was given to the HP-UX 
community instead and thus did little good for VMS customers. I provided 
a pointer here in commp.os.vms to that statement at the time that we 
discovered it, some months later.

Compaq said all along that VMS would be continued under HP, but no one 
paid any attention to their statements, looking instead for word from HP.
