In February 2001, the Québec government entered into a huge contract
with Compaq to replace all the IBM mainframes with Alphas and Tru64.
On June 25 2001, the paper those contracts were written on became
worthless.
What is different here is that one is dealing with a product line that
is alrealy annouced end of sale. No possibilityy of a big change in
strategy. But you still want a proper contract you can take to court if
you intend to purchase systems beyond EOS.
You need to look at whether HP will charge a premium to buy systems
beyond EOS. If so, you could ask to buy them now, but with defered
deliveries. This would garantee availability, but only kick in the
warrantee period upon delivery.
It all depends on what HP is willing to do with customers.
And you may also wish to ask when the last production run for Tukwilla
based systems will be. If you place the order before that time, HP can
then ensure they order enough cabinets, motherboards etc to fulfill your
order.
