On June 24 2001, Compaq was still bragging about how great Alpha was. So
in February, Compaq would not have been telling customers that Alpha was
on the way out. In fact, in February, Curly had not begun to talk with
LaCarly about a merger, and considering how Curly reversed his plan to
kill off VMS, it is likely the plan to kill off Alpha had also been
reversed until he began talks with LaCarly.

Since Curly was dealing with M&A bankers to sell Compaq, he would have
kept Compaq whole until a suitor would have been found, at which point,
he would kill off the stuff the suitor didn't want.

Now, with Whitman at the helm, I doubt very much HP is seeking to sell
itself. I think she truly intends to right the ship. And the decision to
get rid of Itanic is beyond the point of no return. So it is really a
clear path, and one can trust that it will go down that path.

One should not forget that after EOS, as customers flee IA64, there will
be a healthy second hand market.
