Like Hans, I too started with a DG, but with an Eclipse machine running RDOS back in 1978. Later that year, the university procured a VAX 11/780 and my career with VMS started. We (students) had full and exclusive access for 1 semester to prepare the system for academic use. We were the envy of the local consortium of schools having a machine with 1-1/4 Meg of memory!!! I graduated and ran the academic system for 1 year before getting hired by DEC in a local office where I specialized in internals and drivers. Many a story to tell there...
>From there I went to corporate running benchmarks for customers and prototype machines, then to the Alpha port where I primarily worked on MACRO32 code and OpenVMS internal issues. I also got to teach the Alpha arctitecture course to software developers. One item of interest is that in that role I got to work on every model of VAX made including a few that never saw the market.
At this point I have 3 VAX machines, 7 Alphas of various sizes and 4 Itanium boxes for use in various research projects and customer support work.
My goal is to see OpenVMS survive and prosper.
