First decide if you want/need to use auto-negotiation or not!

If no, get another switch (where you can disable it)
If yes, switch it on in the Alpha.

If the latter works, you could just as well keep the
switches (until something else breakes), but you do not
have to buy new equipment to solve *this* problem.

I'd be very interested in knowing what kind of enviroment this
is. I've a hard time seeing a larger professional envoronment
where the network group decided that the FS116 was "good enough".

The FS116 might negotiate just fine, we don't know until
he has tried.
