For any VMS system where the NIC can not be set to "auto" to match the switch port setting you'll likely find that you'll want it set to half-duplex - when the switch fails to negotiate the mode it will settle on half duplex. This may not be apparent until the path is under load - if you have a duplex mismatch you should find that the result is numerous frame check and alignment errors observed by the NIC and the resultant retransmissions, etc...
