My introduction was at Ferranti Computer Systems where I was an operator on Ferranti's own systems, mainly military computers. VMS was a breath of fresh air when compared with the really basic operating systems I was used to. We started with a 11/780 (running V1. something - around 1979) but it had an upgrade to an 11/782. Strange beast the 782!
I was fortunate enough to work with some great people and taught myself programming with their help. I started with Coral 66 - using native and cross-compilers - then Pascal, BASIC and others.
Oh, and the VT100 was much better to use than the old teletypes!
