There are however cases where the manufacturer can line up commitments
while the product is still vapourware. Consider Apple for instance who
can get certain key software vendors to commit to a new platform that
doesn't exist so that they can launch on the day the product is
announced by Apple.

However, VSI is not quite (yet:-) in the same class as Apple. However,
an early public commitment by Oracle and other key software vendors is
stll possibhle, depending on how long ago VSI started to deal with HP to
get this going.

If VSI just went to HP a couple weeks ago and asked "can we get VMS from
you" and HP responsed "sure, take it, it's all yours" then it is quite
different than if the parties have been in negotiations for months,
giving VSI opportunity to also go know at Oracle's door to feel the
terrain on how Oracle would respond.

It would also not surprise me if they went to see whoever owns Multinet
to discuss possible merger of the IP stacks.

similarly they have to talk to the compiler folks at intel, talk to
whoever own DECdocument etc etc. Lots of eggs to lineup.
