The QuickSpecs for that system says the USB ports are USB 2.0 only.  Not USB 3.0.  I can't imagine
much throughput with USB 2.0 tape.  Especially with "numerous tape drives".

I would look at the P411 SAS controller with LTO Ultrium tape drives, if you care about throughput.
I have no idea about VMS tape drive support with this option. The controller looks like it costs
$350 or less on the street.

Traditional parallel SCSI seems like a bad investment at this point in time.
