The DDS drives, being helical scan devices, require regular and careful
alignment.  If you do not go through the alignment procedure at least once
a year, the alignment will drift and then you will run into precisely those
issues.

Linear tape formats in general have less drift issues than helical scan stuff.
LTO is very good, so is DLT.
