Please note that the controller in question here is likely the board on the disk itself, NOT the PKA0 controller.  Also, given that you already have a shadow set, prior to replacing the disk, remove the suspect one from the shadow set just before you intend to replace it.  This will guarantee that the "good" disk is the master.
