You're absolutely right, Unix is much more modern.
Unix and C were developed on the PDP-8. The PDP-8 was the forerunner
of the PDP-11. Both were extremely successful computerlines. And guess
what, the PDP-11 was the forerunner of the Vax, and VMS was developed
for the Vax.
The PDP-8 was a 12 bit computer, with a maximum of 32kilowords (48kB)
internal memory, the Vax was a 32 bit system. Don't you think that an
operating system designed years after Unix was designed, and built for
much more powerful computersystem is also much more sophisticated?
