Not sure how much one can claim that ASTs were in hardware to begin 
with. ASTs themselves are a pure software concept (basically just 
interrupts, but on the OS/userland level instead of hardware/OS level). 
Now, unless I remember wrong, VAX did have some hardware to make the 
implementation simpler, but the whole AST thing originated in RSX, and 
there is absolutely no hardware in the PDP-11 involved.

Or are we not talking about the general AST thing that you have for user 
programs?
