What advantages accrue to such a shuffle?  

I moved most of an RX2600 into another RX2600 chassis.
Chassis #2 was available because of a failed system board.

Chassis #1 sustained enough mechanical damage to the drive cage in shipping
that is was not practical to repair.  (The drive cage is secured by
many rivets to the rest of the chassis :-(

But that's an unusual confluence of circumstances.
