Stupid example to illustrate the problem:

$ pipe dir disk$user:<helbig> | sea sys$pipe login
%DCL-W-INCREDSYN, incomplete redirection syntax; supply missing file parameter

The parser thinks that ">" is the output-redirection token for PIPE, 
rather than part of the directory specification.  I can see where that 
is coming from, but I think PIPE could be modified to see if matched <> 
is part of a directory spec.

And, yes, it is "incomplete redirection syntax" and not "incredible 
syntax".  :-)
