The newest version works with HTTPs.  There have been some updates 
probably after you talked to him.  Of course, the question is whether 
the newest version NEEDS any updates.  Is there any essential feature 
missing?  I don't know.

Dave is still around, but I don't know how much time he plans to put 
into the server in the future.
