That probably isn't SF's doing. Those same fake download buttons appear on many other sides and are ads. A number of the more legitimate (and illegitimate 8-) download sites have a "remove ad" button to hide some of them.

Almost all of the ones I've encountered are served by a particular advertising  platform (this is the one with a green "<" and "[X]" in the top right). Unfortunately, the link for "report this ad" doesn't have a category for "ad serves malware".

BTW, SF and Slashdot are owned by the same holding company (DHI) which makes it amusing that this story broke on Slashdot.
