I'd rather use a product (web server or whatever) that *I*
do not have to build myself.

What if the very VMS specific modules are part of the patches?
Why do you think that all patches just "work" in the VMS
adapted version of the application?

Yes, if the maintainer accepts VMS specific def/ifdef's in the code
base. That is not at all always the case.
