I hadn't thought of that approach and instead was thinking of Linux
within VMware Fusion or VirtualBox.  However I've also been playing with
SmartOS recently and that has KVM support (on Intel systems only at the
moment).  SmartOS is very impressive for running SmartOS instances but
the Linux/KVM support seems to be a bit wobbly and ill-documented, if my
experiences thus far are anything to go by.

Some useful looking error logs await my perusal tomorrow :-)
