I guess "dark" datacenters are becoming the norm.  The latest 1U Intel
Server box we got here has fans that run very fast emitting a rather
high pitched whine.  Loud enough to go right thru the door between the
datacenter and my office.  Now, as everyone here knows by now, I will
be gone soon.  But I did tell my boss that it is unlikely this sapce
will be usable as an office by my replacement (if there is one!!)
The soiund from this box will give you serious headaches and it would
not surprise me if it exceeds OSHA levels for both volume and pitch.

And I still remember the days when operators sat in the room with all
the computer equipment 8 hours a day.
