Sorry, Hoff, had not seen your post before I added my comment...
The other method deals with looking at the first block of the file where the inherent block size is saved. And then you can you use the SET FILE/ATTR=... command if you are on an older version of VMS.
Or take advantage of the various "programs" people offer.
