A relational database was not necessary or even important in 1978.
They could also sell servers with 1 MB of RAM back then.
Time has changed.
During the 80's and the 90's the relational databases took over
a lot of the data storage that was previously done in various ISAM
files and older databases (like network/CODASYL).
