But remember that I live in a parallel universe so whatever I do doesn't
apply to the normal universe :-)
Seriously though.
Considering the Oracle vs HP thing on IA64:
Oracle may be all too happy to stop development on VMS-IA64 and port to
VMS-8086 especially.
If Ellison's goal is to hurt HP, they may prefer if VSI were to support
non HP 8086 servers for VMS. So this may put VSI in a difficult
situation with HP granting them the right to exist, and Oracle wanting
to use VSI to move customers away from HP.
Or, (more realistically) VMS may be so small that Oracle won't use it
for strategic reasons, and instead wait for the hammer to fall on HP-UX
to make gains at HP's expense.
One thing: if I were a large VMS customer, I would want to get from VSI
(under NDA) a commitment that HP will eventually transfer all rights to
VSI because it is not good for VSI to exist solely on the benevilence of
HP which changes whenever a new buzzword-du-jour is invented.
As long as VSI is a slave to HP, I think it makes negotiations between
VSI and partners such as Oracle harder.
Without a full transfer of rights, one will quickly get into a situation
where VSI will have made major modifications to VMS and want to claim
onwership and HP possibly refusing.
