Both the FAQ and Getting Started indicate Java, and the Getting Started 
recommends "Cassandra requires the most stable version of Java 7 or 8 
you can deploy, preferably the Oracle/Sun JVM. Cassandra also runs on 
OpenJDK and the IBM JVM. (It will NOT run on JRockit, which is only 
compatible with Java 6.)", and there are pre-built VMs available to 
ease deployment in your local VM.
