Goal:  copy contents of Apple diskettes to new mountable media.

So I have a VAXstation 3100, the last machine I have that can read 3.5"
diskettes.

What strategy should I use to take the data from diskettes to result in
a .DMG on a mac that can be mounted by OS-X ?

Can I use LD driver to create a .DMG file the same size as the floppy and:

mount both devices as /FOREIGN and :

BACKUP/PHYSICAL  floppy: lda0:


or must I go through a /SAVE intermediate step ?

(I can then FTP the file over to the mac and hopefully mount it.

Anyone else done this ? any "gotchas" I should worry about ?
