I was referring to a modern query tool, which these days usually is
quite often a GUI-based tool, yes.

Much like a good IDE can speed the development of application source
code, and as an IDE can help generate better and more maintainable
source code, tools such as InstantSQL, Sequel Pro and PSequel an speed
the development and the maintenance of SQL code and of SQL databases,
as well as for generating one-off queries and for certain sorts of
database maintenance tasks.

Unfortunately, the native IDEs and the SQL tools that are available for
OpenVMS are rather limited in comparison to those of other platforms,
which means falling back to command-line work and text editors far more
often than I'd prefer, or using remote access where that's available.
As useful as interactive SQL can be, and editors such as vim and emacs
and LSEDIT for that matter, they're just not as effective for me.
Yes, for various other folks programming on OpenVMS, the available VMS
IDEs will be better choice. For various SQL applications, interactive
SQL is the proper choice. But for performing ad hoc queries, I really
don't find the SQL command line all that efficient, particularly in
comparison to what InstantSQL provided.

Yes, I can generate ad hoc queries with interactive SQL, as poorly as
that compares to the cited tools, whether for development work or for
performing ad hoc queries. I'd prefer a better tool here, which is one
of the reasons why I tend to use remote access to the databases.
