The sad thing, JF, is that there are a good number of people out there
who will ask that question seriously.

People have made efforts to replace the standard C string handling
library with something safer; there's actually a full blown SF project
in that area. (I've never used it so I don't know how good it is but
the project is at http://bstring.sourceforge.net/ in case anyone is
interested.)
