Whilst I am appreciative of the Hobbyist program, not being able to keep my home systems up to date is annoying
I'd even be happy to pay a small fee per year for patch access on a delayed basis, say 2 months after initial release? (I'm just throwing this out as an idea)
At least I'd like to see some type of discussion around the whole Hobbyists program - I have yet to see any comment from VSI as to this program and what they wish to do with it.
It's been invaluable to me just having a small system I can learn on and test simple things on. I don't know if this is part of the Hobbyist licence scheme or not but I also use my home system to test upgrades on and to sometimes try work related issues on to ensure I don't break my work systems (because I simply don't have systems at work to play with).
Code (compiled or DCL) that is developed on my home system is never released back to work. This means I am able to learn about changes firsthand and bolster the image of VMS as being robust because I don't break the work systems.
Yeah, some may say this is a violation of the Hobbyist program as it's a grey area but I think VMS's reputation gains more from me using the Hobbyist program this way than it would loose by shutting me out, so scold me if you must...
As an individual, I simply cannot justify the cost of a full support licence but by the same token, I know that if we don't support VSI then VMS isn't going to be here tomorrow so striking a balance between what people can afford might be a good point to discuss?
Sorry for the diversion, I'll now return you to your regular programming (poor pun intended)...
